What is spiritual direction?

Hi, I’m Mike.

I’m a husband, father of two teenagers, and spiritual director with over 20 years of experience in pastoral ministry. My journey into spiritual direction began in 2014 when I felt called to walk alongside others in their faith journeys in a deeper way. That calling led me to complete The Academy of Spiritual Formation and The School of Spiritual Direction through SoulFormation.

Having personally walked through seasons of significant loss, depression, and burnout as a pastor, I know the transformative power of having a trusted companion—a soul friend—to help navigate life’s complexities. Spiritual direction offers that companionship, helping us discern God’s voice and presence, even in life’s most challenging valleys.

What Is Spiritual Direction?

Gordon T. Smith puts it beautifully:
"A spiritual director offers spiritual guidance and companionship to help us make sense of our faith journey, interpret with us the significant markers on the road, and encourage us, particularly through the more difficult transitions and valleys of our pilgrimage. Most of all, a spiritual director helps us make sense of the witness of the Spirit—assisting us to respond well to the question, ‘How is God present to me and how is God, through the ministry of the Spirit, at work in my life?’”

In spiritual direction, we take time to listen for the voice of God and look for His fingerprints in your life. It’s a practice of becoming more aware of God’s loving presence and learning to respond to His invitations with faithful obedience. When we do, the Kingdom of God breaks loose all around us.
